Jan 22, 2020  VirtualDJ is a software used by DJs to replace their turntables and CD players, and use digital music instead of vinyl and CDs. It lets you 'mix' your songs, by playing two or more tracks at the. Settings - Audio Setup TIMECODE What is Timecode Timecode or DVS (Digital Vinyl System) is a special audio signal recorded on a standard vinyl record or audio CD that allows the use of traditional vinyl or non-MIDI capable CD decks to control song playback in VirtualDJ.

Remember the Pepsi Taste Test Challenge? Well, VirtualDJ has today issued its own challenge. It has thrown a gauntlet down by inviting all DJs who currently use any DVS (digital vinyl system) to try the new VirtualDJ 8 DVS engine for free. VirtualDJ claims its new “Xtreme vinyl control DVS Engine 8+” is as good as anything on the market – and is gunning to prove it.

Unlike some other DVS systems, VirtualDJ’s doesn’t require you to own any proprietary hardware in order to use it, and also claims to work with anyone else’s systems “out of the box”. That means if you’re an existing user of any DVS system, you can download the demo and try it right away on the gear you already own.

It also means if you have any DJ audio interface with two stereo inputs and two stereo outputs, or any DJ controller with an audio interface built in and the ability to connect up two record decks or CD players, again you can use VirtualDJ’s timecode solution without needing to buy extra hardware or plugins; all you need is some timecode vinyl or CDs (and of course a pair of decks or CDJs).

“Several months of development time went into making the best DVS engine on the market, it’s truly a game changer as the first cross platform compatible DVS software that will work with virtually all existing DVS hardware and records on the market,” said Andrew Van Almen of Atomix.

Already some big guns are getting behind it, with DJ EtRoNiK (DMC USA Champion/WMC Scratch Champion) saying: “This new DVS system really kicks ass. It’s actually at least as good as the others, if not better. I didn’t expect that from Virtual DJ. But I’m having a blast using it!”

Atomix has also released a new video series called “Atomix Power Room” (you can see the first one here) where participants get to play with it, the first round being the instructors at the Scratch DJ Academy in Chicago.

First thoughts

This is disruptive in the sense that, assuming it really is as good as the rest (and it certainly appears to be), it removes the necessity to own a system that only certain hardware will work with. To many DJs, this was always a somewhat artificial constraint, involving the need to carry extra hardware around for no apparent reason other than licensing / commercial concerns. VirtualDJ is clearly hoping this flexibility will attract users to its Virtual DJ 8 platform.

It wouldn’t be surprising, though, if other manufacturers have a few words to say – at least in private – about VirtualDJ’s engineers building in compatibility with their own “closed” systems in this way, not least because currently Virtual DJ doesn’t even have its own timecode vinyl on sale.

Is VirtualDJ timecode coming?

We asked Atomix, the makers of VirtualDJ, whether it will be re-introducing its own timecode vinyl (there was some once, a long time ago) any time soon. While the company wouldn’t confirm this, it is actually rumoured that this is indeed coming.

One of the promo videos we’ve seen for this release has a (seemingly rather hastily mocked-up) piece of VirtualDJ timecode vinyl featured in it. It would definitely be a good move to introduce this if the company is serious about pushing the timecode abilities of VirtualDJ 8, not least to show the rest of the industry that it isn’t just piggybacking on everyone else’s timecode.

Numark N4 - Using timecode with Virtual DJ Pro or CUE

One of the coolest features of the Numark N4 is timecode streaming. You can use your choice of timecode CD's or vinyl to control another two decks. The following will show you how configure Virtual DJ Pro or CUE to accept timecode through the N4 interface.

Getting Started

  1. What you will need:
    • Numark N4
    • AtomixVirtual DJ PRO or CUE software
    • Blank CD-R's, Timecode CD's, or Timecode Vinyls (1 for each deck used, 2 max)
    • RCA Cables

Downloading the Virtual DJ Timecode as an Audio File

  1. There are two different free timecode CD's available for you to download.
    • Consumer Grade Sound Level works best with low output CD players such as rackmount dual cd-players, Numark Axis-9, Pioneer CDJ-100/CDJ-200 and more.
    • Pro Grade Sound Level compensates for the loud output that Pro CD players produce and avoids saturation of the timecode signal to your sound card. The timecode signal is lowered by -14dB. You will need this lower dB level timecode CD, if you are using Pro CD players like the Pioneer CDJ-800/CDJ-1000, Denon DNS-3500, or similar.Download then burn the MP3 file as audio CD with your favorite CD burner program (NO normalization setting on!).
  2. Download the timecode file with one of the links, then burn the MP3 file as an audio CD with your favorite CD burner program (WITHOUT a normalization setting on!).
*Right-click one of the links HERE, and choose 'Save as.' to save the file to your computer.

Setting Up the N4 Hardware

  1. In order for the N4 to stream the timecode into Virtual DJ/CUE correctly, you will need to configure a few switches on the hardware.
  2. First, flip the following switch on the back panel to Timecode.
  3. If you are using a turntable that uses a phono output, flip the input switch to PHONO on the back panel. Otherwise, CD players will typically use LINE (line level signal). This selection is important. The wrong input level can make the timecode signal distort, causing tracking issues. There are two input selection switches on the N4, one for each RCA input, allowing you to use a CD player on one input and a turntable on the other.
  4. Now the N4's mixer switch on the front panel will need to be set to PC. This switch tells the hardware to use a virtual deck on the corresponding channel, instead of a direct feed from the RCA input.
  5. The hardware is now ready to use. With the N4 platters focused on DECK 3 and DECK 4, you can have control of 4 decks simultaneously (2 platters via MIDI/2 timecode controls - 4 Virtual Decks).

Setting Up Virtual DJ Pro/CUE to Accept Timecode

  1. Open Virtual DJ Pro or CUE.
  2. Click Config in the top right corner to enter the software preferences.
  3. Set the Input, Output, and Sound Card options to match the following:
  4. Once the routing options are set, enter the Timecode Config menu:
  5. Make sure the correct timecode source is selected in the Vinyl drop down of the Timecode Settings. In this example, we are using the VirtualDJ CD selection with the CD timescodes we created. Press play on the device using timecode to see the graphic signal analyzer respond. You should see the following spherical shape when the software is getting a good reading of the incoming timecode. The GAIN is most likely the only adjustment you will have to make.

*If you are not getting a solid reading while adjusting the Gain knob, you may be using the incorrect audio file from Virtual DJ or the wrong input gain selection on the back of the N4.

  6. You are now fully configured for external timecode control!
If you close the preferences, you will see the virtual deck(s) moving with your CD player or turntable.
